Encounter vs. Experience

Everyone wants experience. Experience is the first feeling you get when something happens to you. Experience of your first love, or your first salary. Experience of being dumped, experience of food poisoning, experience of jumping out of a plane…and when you’ve experience it all, you want more…from a small roller coaster, you want a larger one…more challenges. You’ve experienced some Italian food, and now you want to experience other type of food - Japanese maybe?

Well, experience is just a superficial feeling. It fades with time. Sometimes, you forget right away after it.

Encounter is different. An encounter is a series of experiences that changes you from inside. It just not just rest on your senses but go deeper into your nerves and bones. In another words, it changes your life. =p

Don’t really understand me? Doest really see the line?

Well, imagine walking down the street…and you see this beautiful girl/handsome guy. That is an experience of meeting someone beautiful/handsome. But an encounter happens when you bump into the person, fell down, get up, and start to have conversation - sorry, oopps, are u ok…etc.

How about when you have a crush on someone? That is an experience of love.  But it is over right after he/she does something you dislike..or someone else comes along. But an encounter with love, you will never forget her, and no one can tell you how bad she is…in your eyes, she’s the best person you’ve ever met. And you would do a million, gazillion things for her! An encounter with love is a series of experiences that changes you and the way you respond/behave.

In our walk with God, many times we ask God for more of Him…more experience of God. We want to know God, we ask God for more experience. And God will only give you as much as you ask, even tho He wants to give you more than just experiences.

But let me challenge you to ask for more…to ask for encounters instead of just experiences with God. And I will guarantee you, it will change your life forever.

Experiences with God is great…in worship, seminars, camps..but it is the same once we go back to our life. But when you have an encounter with God….nothing is the same..your walk with God is brought up a higher level, your faith grows….

If you ask God for bread, He will not give you a stone, if you ask God for a fish, He will not give you a serpent. (matt 7:9-10)
